The money nobody claims.

Collected by authors' societies worldwide in 2024€13.97bn
Source

Every year, part of what societies and streaming services collect can't be matched to the people who earned it. These figures come straight from their own reports — and show where that money ends up.

Study 1

Streaming services handed $397M they could not match to songwriters

Apple Music$148.3M
Spotify$146.3M
Amazon Music$36.6M
Google Play / YouTube$30.1M
16 other services *$20.8M
Pandora$15.2M

In February 2021 US streaming services transferred the royalties they had never matched to a songwriter. Apple Music and Spotify account for three quarters of it.

Five years on, 40% of that black box has still not reached anyone

Paid to rightsholders · $239M Matched, not yet paid * · $78M Still unmatched * · $80M

The MLC has matched about $317M and paid out about $239M. No unmatched money has yet been shared out by market share — the first such payout starts in April 2027 with 2021 usage.

Why UK songwriters' money was held at the end of 2024

Disputes between claimants£27.5M
Awaiting payment or financial details£18.9M
Successor members£9.1M
Suspensions and holds£8.6M
Awaiting ownership information£7.4M
Not a PRS member£541.3K

PRS was holding about £69M that it had matched but not paid. Missing bank details and missing ownership information are reasons a songwriter can fix.

Where unclaimed money ends up

Shared out by market share

In the US, unmatched streaming royalties the MLC still holds will be shared among everyone else in proportion to their existing share of usage — the first payout starts in April 2027. The biggest catalogues get the biggest absolute cut of money they did not earn.

Source

Shared with identified members

PRS redistributes unmatched online money pro rata to the repertoire it could identify; Buma shares it among rightsholders of the same usage years. Your share goes to whoever was registered.

Source

Moved into funds or the society's budget

EU law lets societies treat money as non-distributable after 3 years; their members decide its use. SIAE and GEMA fund social and cultural programmes; SACEM's statutes say royalties unclaimed for 5 years are acquired by the society.

Source

The rules differ, but none of these routes pays the creator who earned the money. The only way to get it is to be registered — and to claim in time.
